A lot can happen in just two years.

In 2017 actor Emily Schooley connected with playwright Erika Reesor. One collaboration led to another, and by 2018, the two had formed the Queer on Stage Collective; a Hamilton-based theatre company that brings together artists from the LGBTQ2S+ community to promote visibility, inclusion and community of queer lives in theatre. This Saturday (October 5) at the Staircase Theatre, Queer on Stage will present their second annual Pride Showcase.

The showcase comes on the heels of a successful summer for the collective. In August, the company produced a well-attended and enthusiastic trivia night fundraiser. They were also featured as part of September’s Toronto Queer Theatre Festival. This weekend’s showcase is a natural progression of the momentum Queer on Stage has been building, as they feature original performances of theatre, music, comedy and movement, all by creators from the LGBTQ2S+ community.

Reesor herself has even contributed a short performance to the showcase. Titled Unbroken Ties, the theatrical work brings together two former lovers who are trying to stay friends. When a simple picnic turns into an emotional minefield, they are forced to confront what is still possible for them.

Tamai Kobayashi will also present a theatrical offering. Award-winning Kobayashi is best known as the recipient of the 2014 Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ Emerging writers and her novel Prairie Ostrich was named as one of the 100 Young Adult Books That Make You Proud to be Canadian. Her contribution to the Pride Showcase is Cold Feet; the story of a butch/femme couple who have reservations about their wedding day.

Additional theatrical works will be presented by Laura Piccinin and Jade Walker. Not just for theatre artists, the Pride Showcase will also feature a musical performance by Drag Queen Norma-Lee and an intimate comedy experience by Alice Rose. Physical theatre piece, Imposter Queer, by Rebekka Gondosch and Jesse Horvath complete the evening.

Queer on Stage Collective’s Pride Showcase is a one-night only event taking place at the Staircase Theatre (27 Dundurn Street North) starting at 7:30pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance on Eventbrite for $12. The ticket price increases to $15 at the door.
