The 2020 Hamilton Arts Awards were handed out over the course of this years Arts Week through a series of five online videos from June 11-20. A total of sixty-one individuals were nominated for awards in 2020 and recognized throughout the video series.

Discipline-specific categories had two award recipients apiece. Each category had an “established” recipient, who receives $2,500, and a commemorative bronze medal designed by artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt as their award. Each established award nominee also nominated a corresponding “emerging” artist. If the established nominee received the award in the category, their corresponding emerging artist won that category as well. Emerging artist award recipients received $1,000, a commemorative bronze medal and certificate.

In addition to discipline-specific awards, categories also included arts innovation, a lifetime achievement award, and the Shirley Elford Emerging Artist Prize in arts education and community arts. In total, nineteen awards totalling $35,000 were presented.
