Call for Artists: BIPOC hArt Dance Series

The Hamilton Arts Council is very pleased to announce the inaugural BIPOC hArt Dance Series. The Series supports the professional ambitions of dance artists and introduces new infrastructure for professional dance presentation within the City of Hamilton. The Series will feature short dance films, to be created by talented dance and movement artists, to be screened on October 20, 2023 at The Westdale, an independent film and cultural space.

The Series provides funding of $4,000 for the production of each dance film, offering artists the opportunity to engage with new audiences, and build their professional portfolios. The selected artists  will have the chance to collaborate and connect with other dance and film professionals and receive guidance from the Series Curator, Mayumi Lashbrook. Mayumi (she/her) “is a Japanese Canadian settler who seeks to expose, challenge, and rectify systems of oppression by creating innovative, introspective and inclusive dance theatre”. Mayumi recently toured her live dance performance work ‘Enemy Lines’ presented at the McMaster University’s L.R. Wilson Hall from May 26 to 28, 2023. Additionally, the featured artists will attend the public screening event and provide insights into their creative processes and the resulting works.

The BIPOC hArt Dance Series is specifically designed to support artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Colour (racialized), recognizing the systemic barriers that exist for these communities in accessing professional development and presentation opportunities. To be eligible for the program, artists should identify as members of these communities, be early-career/emerging artists who have not achieved substantial recognition or exposure, and live or work in the Greater Hamilton Area, including Six Nations of the Grand River.

To apply, interested artists must have an Artist/Creative account on The Arty Crowd, accompanied by a visible public profile. Applicants should complete an ‘Expression of Interest’ form before Sunday, June 4th, 2023, providing a short description of their intended creation. From these Expressions of Interest, the Series Curator will invite candidates  to complete applications for final selection by a panel of adjudicators.
