Comedy Special to be Recorded at The Zoetic Next Week

Telling jokes may have taken comedian Mike Demissie to other cities, but to record his comedy special, the jokester is returning to his roots.

Demissie, who performs under the name Black Zeus was born in Greece to Ethiopian parents and raised in Hamilton and London, Ontario. While living in Hamilton, he participated in sketch troupes, including Aunt Francis (now defunct) as well as developing his own comedy act. His solo material saw him headline shows at Yuk Yuks Hamilton (now Levity Comedy Club), Gallagher’s on Augusta and more.

Now based in Toronto, Black Zeus’ star continues to rise, with successes including multiple appearances at the acclaimed Comedy as a Second Language series, appearances on SiriusXM and the Just For Laughs Toronto Festival. He’s been featured as one of Canada’s best comics and at a “Future of Comedy” showcase, both at Toronto’s Comedy Bar. His podcast, where he covers current events and his comedy journey, charted at number twenty-eight on the Apple podcasts chart for stand-up comedy in Canada.

It’s on his podcast where Black Zeus notes that he’s an “Adam Sandler approved” comedian, due to Sandler attending a show where he was performing.

“I turn my head slightly, and it’s Adam f***ing Sandler- and I’m like thirty to forty seconds from going up on stage.” Black Zeus recalled in a July podcast as he recounted the nerves he felt performing for the popular comedian. Despite the nervousness, Black Zeus’ set was a hit.

“(Sandler) told me that I was good, and the kicker was that he said ‘don’t ever stop.’”

The comedian plans to continue sharing his work in his first comedy special taping, entitled Black Zeus: Self Portrait. The special will feature his life story, combining his worldly life experiences and absurd personality, while showcasing some of the best jokes of the comedian’s eleven-year career.

The special will tape at Toronto’s Backroom Comedy Club on November 18 at 8pm & 10pm, and The Zoetic in Hamilton on November 19 at 8pm. The recorded special will be available as a digital release in 2023.
