Release: Master Pianist Takes the Stage for Conservatory Recital

Award-winning master pianist André Laplante arrives at the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts on April 10, 2022, for a recital as part of the 2021/2022 Performing Arts Sunday Series (PASS).

Heralded for his “bone-deep musical sensibility” by the Globe and Mail and referred to as “Canada’s national treasure” by The Wholenote, André Laplante is a commanding recitalist, a chamber musician of distinction, and a concerto soloist of formidable virtuosity guided by a rare musical intelligence. He has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia, and has released a series of ever more impressive CDs. He garnered international attention after winning prizes at the Geneva and Sydney International Piano Competitions and capturing the silver medal at the International Tchaïkovsky Competition in Moscow and making his debut at Carnegie Hall. Critics have compared him with Ashkenazy, Horowitz and Rudolph Serkin, placing him in the elite circle of virtuoso pianists who do not hesitate to take risks.

Most recently, Mr. Laplante’s work has been heard on the soundtrack for Call me By Your Name, the 2017 film that received Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor (Timothee Chalamet), winning the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Mr. Laplante has also worked with such distinguished conductors as John Storgårds, Kent Nagano, Sir Neville Marriner, Jacques LaCombe, Sergiu Comissiona, Rudolph Barshai, Fabien Gabel, Alexander Mickelthwate, Andrew Davis, Kazuoshi Akiyama, Tatsuya Shimono, and the late Sir Yehudi Menuhin among many others. He has appeared widely in Europe, Asia, the U.S., and at Canadian and international festivals.

In 2005, Mr. Laplante was named an Officer of the Order of Canada, and in that same year, was awarded the Prix Opus for Best Performer of the Year.  He holds two Opus Awards for live performances: Best Concert in Montréal and Best Concert in Québec Province, and has since gone on to win another Prix Opus, this time for Best Concert of the Year.

The April 10 is one of six events in the Conservatory’s Performing Arts Sunday Series (PASS). Mr. Laplante’s recital is the second-last event of the season, which starts at 2pm in the Conservatory’s Black Box Theatre. The final concert of the season will also feature a pianist; Janina Fialkowska on May 8.

Tickets for this event are available online at hcarts.ca/PASS or by calling 905-528-4020.
