Snapshots: The Week of May 6

Hamilton Happenings

  • This weekend is Doors Open Hamilton; an annual event where 24 buildings of architectural, historic, cultural and social significance open their doors to the public for free across Hamilton.
  • From May 2 – 28, Centre [3] celebrates three emerging artists-in-residence: Olivia Brouwer, Valentin Brown and Kareem-Anthony Ferreira. The exhibit is the culmination of a twelve-week residency for artists with less than five years of exhibition history that offers dedicated studio time, space and technical support.

Awards Season is Upon Us

  • Congratulations to Hamilton poet Eddie Lartey who recently won the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam! Local audiences can see and hear Lartey’s work either through the Hamilton You Poets, or through the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s recent exhibit Breaking the Vault.
  • CBC Hamilton is a Central Region Award finalist for the 2022 Radio, Television and Digital News Canada Award in the category of Digital- Breaking News (small/medium market). CHCH TV was also nominated in the category of Multiplatform- Excellence in Innovation and Video- Breaking News (small/medium market). Award winners will be announced May 24. 
  • The 2022 Siminovtich Prize is accepting nominations to celebrate the transformative and influential work of directors working in English or French. The successful prize winner will receive national recognition as recipient of the prestigious award, $75,000 and the opportunity to support an emerging artist with mentorship and $25,000. Nominations may be submitted here until July 4, 2022.

Here & There

  • DEADLINE EXTENDED- Red Betty Theatre is now accepting submissions to IBPOC women playwrights for their second Decolonise Your Ears New Play Festival. Two playwrights will be selected to receive a commission of $1,000 to develop their work with dramaturgical support, culminating in a staged reading in October 2022. Submissions are due to by May 7, 2022.
  • Art in the Workplace is now accepting entries for their 34th exhibit. Submissions will close on May 9, 2022.
  • The Hamilton Fringe Festival is accepting visual art submissions for its Visual Fringe. All submissions will be accepted. The deadline to apply is May 12, 2022. Submission forms are available online.
  • Craftadian is seeking artists, artisans and designers to participate in their August 20 juried summer market at McMaster Innovation Park. Applications are available online and due May 13, 2022.
  • Submissions are now open for the Playwrights Guild of Canada’s 2022 Tom Hendry Awards honouring Canadian playwrights in a wide range of categories. Learn more and submit your work by May 16th here.
  • Filipinas of HamOnt invite Filipinas in the Greater Hamilton area to write letters to women in the future and their future selves about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of their Women Writing Women initiative. Learn more, and submit your letter by May 18, 2022 here.
  • Supercrawl is seeking submissions for music, fashion, theatre, dance, performance, talks and spoken word for the 2022 festival (September 9 – 11). The deadline for submissions is May 20, 2022. Find out more here.
  • The Hamilton Fringe Festival is currently seeking short films (24 minutes or less) by Canadian filmmakers to screen at their Films on the Fringe: Shorts Showcase event on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 9:00 PM. The deadline to apply is May 30, 2022. Find out more here.
  • The Carnegie Gallery is accepting exhibition submissions in all media of fine art or craft for its 2023 programming year. Established and emerging artists are welcome to apply by May 31, 2022. Find out more here.
